MacMillan Home Description
“Spacious” and “Gracious” are two words that come instantly to mind when you cross the threshold at MacMillan. It is a perfect family habitat with ample accommodation for eight. Consider it a wonderful place for “time together” where a sense of timelessness prevails. Poised on the slopes of Ram’s Horn Mountain in prestigious Windcliff Estates, MacMillan never takes its eyes off the mountains — and neither will you. Each window on the western facade frames a better picture of the Rocky Mountains than the last. Spacious seating affords a choice of vantage points. The fireplace is a popular meeting place when popcorn or “s’mores” are on your mind. The kitchen features both a handsome view and all of the amenities necessary for a holiday meal or a snack. MacMillan’s sprawling deck is decked out exactly as Rocky Mountain decks should be. Its lounging chairs face west and the wrought table invites meals out where the birds can join in the conversation. And, if a songfest seems truly in order, the MacMillan piano awaits your touch.
A singularly-striking feature of the MacMillan residence is its library. Its shelves hold more volumes than many Colorado small-town libraries. Michener, Shakespeare, Thomas Jefferson, Thoreau, and Rudyard Kipling are among the contributing authors. You can read or peruse fairy tales by Grimm, “Alices’s Adventures in Wonderland,” Sandberg’s “Lincoln,” or Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables.” Sample “Women’s Diaries of the Westward Journey” to grasp their struggles to help tame the west and make your visit here possible. Curl up with “Weaving Mountain Memories” — even as you are weaving some of your own. The depth and breadth of the offerings speak volumes of the minds and manners of the proud MacMillan family. Treasures from the marketplaces and bazaars of the world abound in the library and throughout their home
The king master suite is truly “fit for a king.” French doors open to reveal an enormous four-poster bed replete with a rare damask coverlid. A desk stands watch by the window contemplating the Continental Divide. Sit for a spell — and if a poem comes to mind, jot it down for posterity. Four additional bedrooms downstairs insure pleasant accommodation for everyone in your party. Each bed is made up with care and each one comes with a wondrous view.
At MacMillan you will be drawn again and again to the deck where a timeless drama plays out like fine theater. The stage is set and you have front row seats. In Act One wild flowers gush accompanied by a splendid chorus of birds. Elk are packing as they ready for their trek to the tundra. A still-sleepy bear ambles by sniffing the crisp mountain air. It is springtime in the Rocky Mountains. The lighting is spectacular for Act Two. Longer days abound. Eagles soar. Wild turkeys gobble their way into view. Deer drop by to show off their spotted fawns. Streams are in full flow and leap in cascades and torrents as they rush to the next cataract. Sunsets flash radiant beams of light down Forest Canyon directly in your field of view.
Stay for Act Three and savor both the color and the character of cooler days in the Rockies. Bright yellow aspen trees emblazon the scene. Elk are bugling and fitful in their annual rut. Festivals and fun abound to pack the abbreviated days of fall. And, the mountain peaks and rills hoard the last bits of snow from a season long ago. Act Four, the climactic finale to the seasons of the mountains, will bring winter center stage. But, first a major scenery change has to take place. A curtain of clouds and fog descends to mask the major shakeup backstage. Then, replete with fanfare, the curtain rises again and the audience around you gasps. The mountains before you
— nearly bare as Act Three ended — are now frosted with billions of tons of snow beckoning to you to be trekked and tracked. It matters not when you enter this majestic drama playing out at MacMillan. The timeless unfolding of the seasons in the Rocky Mountains plays on and on — one of the longest-running shows in Creation.
One guest has characterized the views from MacMillan as “Close to what heaven may look like.” You will certainly feel welcome and at ease. As the motto on the wall says, “While you tarry here …..we would have thee enjoy the blessings of home.”
Although Estes Park [Rocky Mountain National Park’s gateway community] is only 15 minutes distant by car, you will always feel securely tucked away at “MacMillan” — separated from the “hustle and bustle” of people and their traffic. The Windcliff enclave embracing the MacMillan residence is a private residential community comprising 260 acres on the sunny western slopes of Ram’s Horn Mountain. It is served by a single entrance to private roads with no through streets or heavy traffic. It is truly a world apart!
